Médecins du Monde began to provide healthcare to vulnerable people in Europe 20 years ago in France, when doctors and nurses returning from volunteering overseas realised that people in their own
country had great difficulties accessing healthcare.

Projects overseas

From providing emergency medical relief to victims of the tsunami to improving the lives of women recovering from acid attacks in Palestine, we are continuously evaluating the health needs of
vulnerable people worldwide and providing them with the medical attention and psychological support they need.
This is achieved through three types of healthcare projects and a commitment to sharing our skills and training local people. These can be defined as:
- Emergency response projects
- Post-emergency, crisis, rehabilitation and reconstruction projects
- Long-term, sustainable healthcare development projects involving training local healthcare staff
Our objective of achieving universal access to healthcare means that we give a voice to vulnerable people. We report on their stories which may not otherwise be heard, when we witness obstacles to
healthcare, or abuses of human rights.
In addition, three themes have been identified upon which our overseas projects are broadly based:
- Childhood
- Globalisation and its effects on health, including migration issues
- Infectious diseases: working towards worldwide prevention
Médecins du Monde currently has 89 projects running in 54 countries worldwide.
