"Sound and Fair" A campaign to realise a sustainable trade in African blackwood.
Mpingo, the African blackwood tree, is used to make clarinets and oboes, Irish flutes and bagpipes and is the medium of choice for local wood carvers. Its dark, lustrous heartwood is one of the
most valuable timbers in the world.
The tree is under threat from over-exploitation and could become commercially extinct. However it also has great potential to act as a flagship for conservation of the coastal forests and miombo
woodlands of East Africa.
The Mpingo Conservation Project aims to conserve these endangered forests by promoting sustainable and socially equitable harvesting of mpingo and other valuable timber stocks.
Our work spans three major aspects:
community forestry, supporting village communities
awareness-raising, the potential value of the forest to them
focused field research, for sustainability.
